Volunteers review how to invest contributions

As the annual campaign enters its final weeks, volunteers have begun the process of evaluating programs for United Way funding next year.

During April and May, 58 volunteers on the Citizen Review Panels will be going on site visits to agencies and reviewing applications to support dozens of vital programs ranging from prenatal check-ups to hospice care.

“This is one of the most rewarding volunteer tasks at United Way because the Citizen Review Panelists really get to see results in action,” said Taunya Bryant (pictured), chairwoman of United Way’s Resource Investment Committee. “It can also be one of the most difficult, as they try to make funding decisions among so many worthy programs that help so many people.” Read more >>

United Way spreading information, love

United Way is reaching out to past and future donors in many ways as the campaign enters the home stretch.

In February, United Way of Martin County released its annual report to the community (click for PDF version), and the Girl Scouts of Palm Glades Council Troop #490 created valentines that were used as thank you notes to donors.

With about a month to go, United Way is just three-quarters of the way to its goal of $2.225 million. The end-of-campaign Champions of the Community event is scheduled for March 30 at St. Mary’s in Stuart.

Notes from the United Way campaign

Martin Memorial Health Systems invited the medical community to a tropical buffet and reception to celebrate "support of the treasured agencies of United Way."

United Way Board Member Dr. Anis Akrawi (pictured at left) spoke from the heart to the attendees, reminding them how United Way supported-agencies like Volunteers in Medicine, the Drug Abuse Treatment Association and Healthy Start work to help the community avoid being overwhelmed with health crises.

Miguel Coty, administrator for public relations and marketing at Martin Memorial Health Systems, said MMHS is exceeding its goal and has raised more than $42,000. Last year, Martin Memorial raised $31,691.
