Champions of the Community
2004-05
United Way's annual Champions of the Community event is designed to
honor volunteers and donors who have made an impact on improving
lives in Martin County.
Among the awards presented
during the April 7, 2005, event were the following:
Corporate Challenge
Award
Publix
Super Markets: Honored for a total of $258,900 in giving from the
employees and the corporation. Publix’s corporate gift also included
a special hurricane relief contribution above and beyond the
company’s annual gift.
Community Challenge
Award
Harbour Ridge: This champion community had the highest
percentage of participation among the 19 communities that run
organized campaigns: 62% of the community's residents participated,
achieving record-breaking donations of $210,000.
Campaign Chairman’s
Award
Chuck
and Priscilla Sawicki. As co-chairs of the local United Way’s Alexis
De Tocqueville Society, this couple helped the society grow to 35
members who contributed more than $500,000 for the 2004/2005
campaign.
President’s Award
Scripps
Treasure Coast Newspapers: For supporting charitable causes,
year-in, year-out, sponsoring events, and devoting precious space to
help United Way help the community. This year, Scripps spearheaded a
series of ads titled “Rebuilding the Community” that raised nearly
$60,000 for United Way’s hurricane relief efforts on the Treasure
Coast.
Alexis de
Tocqueville Award
S.
Prestley and Helen Blake: For their longtime support of United Way
and their legacy of giving to the YMCA, the Library Foundation and
the American Red Cross.
CHARACTER COUNTS!

Dr.
Sara Wilcox, superintendent of Martin County Schools, for being a
founding member and remaining an involved and steadfast supporter
for 10 years.

Mary LaFauve, who
started a generous and committed relationship with CHARACTER COUNTS!
two years ago when her daughter interned for a semester with
CHARACTER COUNTS!

Phyllis Kordick,
for continuing to be a champion for CHARACTER COUNTS! after the
death of her husband, Joe Kordick, who founded the Youth Character
Awards.

National Bank, honored for 20,000 volunteer hours contributed by its
459 employees.

honored with this year’s Champions for Children Award.

leadership in disaster preparedness and response.

Martin County
ARES/RACES and the American Radio Relay League, for volunteerism
during disaster response and nationwide support of the White Doves
Holiday Project.
Resource Investment Champions Awards
Gene Van Curen and
Britt Frank: For commitment and service to the resource investment
panels that direct the United Way investment to programs that best
address the community’s most pressing needs.

New Campaign Chair
The 2004-2005 campaign chairman, Nick Blount of Florida Power &
Light, received the evening’s final recognition.
Then, he passed the
baton and announced that next year’s United Way campaign chair will
be Margot Graff of Fidelity Federal Bank & Trust. Mrs. Graff already has been an enthusiastic leader in
United Way campaigns, serving as a loaned executive and campaign
consultant. In accepting the challenge for the 2005-2006, campaign,
she told the gathering. “Thank you, and go home and get some rest.
Next year starts tomorrow!” |
