CHARACTER COUNTS! golf tourney raises $20,000

One hundred golfers enjoyed beautiful weather and challenging greens during the Seventh Annual “Tee It UP” for CHARACTER charity golf tournament April 30 at Monarch Country Club in Palm City.

This year’s event raised nearly raised nearly $20,000 as the sole fundraiser for CHARACTER COUNTS!, a program of United Way of Martin County, that provides character-building activities in schools, civic organizations and businesses.

"CHARACTER COUNTS! encourages good sportsmanship and increases public awareness of the importance of core ethical values," CHARACTER COUNTS! Director Holly Laiben said. "This golf fundraiser will help to ensure these activities continue."

CHARACTER COUNTS! also teamed up with Clubs for a Cause, a program that offers any golf tournament the ability to raise additional funds by collecting best used clubs, to amass more than 500 golf clubs from participants, Golf USA and Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County, and members of private courses including Monarch, Piper’s Landing, Martin Downs, Palm Cove, The Fox Club, Willoughby and Lost Lake.

    Low gross winners – (60) Butch Bayley, Richard Anderson, Michael Neary and Clemens Kuhlig

    Low net winners (54) – Doug Brimlow, Margaret Orbeson, Bob Sempier and Bruce Farren

    Low net second place (55) – Glen Preston, Mike Johnson, Andrew Cornell and Jack Lambert

    Low net third place (56) – Nick Bishop, Mark Feldman, Bill Bee and Ed Bee

    Low net fourth place (56) – Wayne Hyndt, Bill Holder, Kevin Landrey and Dan Covey

    Closest to the Line – Chuck Morrison and Arlene Simms

The buffet dinner following the tournament featured a live auction with auctioneer Justin Paul of Elliot Paul & Co., and offered golf foursomes from McArthur, Loblolly, Willoughby, Piper’s Landing, The Fox Club, Harbour Ridge, Mariner Sands, a photo session with Dultmeier Photography, and an Indiantown RV excursion and brunch with hosts Butch and Jan Bayley.

An array of fundraising prizes were awarded, including foursomes at Lost Lake, Yacht & County Club and Hammock Creek; gift certificates for Peter’s Steak House, Courtine’s, Brick Wall Grill, tickets for the Atlantic Classical Orchestra and to the Library Foundation of Martin County’s 2010 Bookmania Meet the Authors Cocktail Party.

On the course, each par-3 hole had a hole-in-one prize, including a 2009 Toyota Prius and other gifts courtesy of John Pierson’s Toyota of Stuart and a resort getaway courtesy of Monarch.
