TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY Students recognized at Joe Kordick Youth Character awards
This year’s awards ceremony took place on March 9 at Indian River State College’s Wolf High-Technology Center in Stuart where 20 middle school students received a certificate and a $100 savings bond, while nine high school students received a certificate and a $1,000 check. “The Joe Kordick Youth Character awards are given annually to middle school students and high school seniors who are nominated based on their character,” said Holly Laiben, CHARACTER COUNTS! director. “A panel of independent judges from the community makes the final selection based upon the students’ essays, their volunteer and community involvement, how they have dealt with and overcome obstacles in their lives, and personal interviews with the high school nominees.” This year’s awards included inspirational words from guest speakers, Nancy Kline, Superintendent, Martin County School District and Chuck Eckhardt, City of Stuart 10th Street Youth Initiative, former Joe Kordick Youth Character award and 2010-11 Employee Pillar of Character recipient. On hand to present the awards were Maryellen Quinn-Lunny, executive director of the MCSD ESE and Student Services; and CHARACTER COUNTS! advisory board members Jim Sopko, Suzanne Wentley, Gene Gillis, Nick Blount, Darcy Flierl, Kelly McIntyre and Mark Lively. The evening was made possible thanks to the generous support from The Kordick Trust; Kramer, Sopko & Levenstein, PA; and Proctor, Crook, Crowder & Fogal, CPA.
