CHARACTER COUNTS!

Pillar of Character Awards 2003

CHARACTER COUNTS! is proud to announce the recipients of the 2003 Pillar of Character Award. The honorees received their awards at their place of business during CHARACTER COUNTS! Week (Oct. 19 - 25, 2003).

All nominees were judged on their demonstrated commitment to the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Caring, Citizenship, Fairness and Responsibility.

The effort was sponsored in part by David Golden, attorney at law.

The Pillars of Character for 2003 are as follows:

Eleanor Davis, human resource administrator for Proctor Crook & Crowder.

Nominated by the staff of Proctor Crook & Crowder: "Eleanor has helped to make the employees feel more important and more confident that their voices are being heard. Eleanor’s character shines through everything she does.”

Leslie Haston, reception/secretary for Dr. William J. Bryant.

Nominated by Dr. William J. & Taunya G. Bryant: "Leslie is a model of the pillar of responsibility. She has 'taken the bull by the horns' and learned all the office job functions so well that we can now be comfortable that when we are not in the office, everything will run smoothly."

Hildi Hipps, pharmacist for the Martin County Health Department.

Nominated by the midwives: "'Where there’s a will there’s a way' seems to be Hildi’s motto as she personally gets involved in seeing that the community is served. She certainly represents the quality of character that we will celebrate this October.”

Betty D. Marshall, teacher at Murray Middle School.

Nominated by Diana Lenartiene: "Betty has never tired of her demanding duties, remaining faithful to her position at MMS for 25 years! Her endless and boundless love and involvement with the mentally handicapped is truly an example of the Six Pillars of Character."

Ellen Nixon, volunteer manager at Jensen Beach Community Church Thrift Shop.

Nominated by Merilynn Watkins: "If character really counts - and we all know it does - Ellen Nixon ranks at the top of the list for that admirable trait."

Kathy Martin, Records Unit at Stuart Police Department.

Nominated by Sgt. Martin Jacobson: "Kathy goes beyond her duties and assignments.... She does her job without fanfare. Her character certainly does count!"

 SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Charles Greller, David Lucas and Sandra Graham, bus drivers for Martin County School District. Nominated by the Martin County School Board.

The judges chose these bus drivers for special recognition for "Courage and Heroic Service" for their actions at the scene of a head-on collision on Dixie Highway on Sept. 26. The drivers extinguished a car fire, controlled traffic and comforted the victims of the collision.
