Family Ties:
Surviving the Teenage Years

This presentation on Sept. 5, 2007, was designed to help parents and teenagers bridge the gap between them.

Susan Dockerill, founder of Life Works Parenting Tools, presented the program. She hit on these key points:

  • Strategies for verbal defense

  • Staying calm in difficult situations

  • Confronting major problems

  • Hearing what your teen is really saying

  • Helping your teenager cope

  • How to spend quality time together without the attitude

  • How to handle friends you have concerns about

  • How to handle the first real heartbreak

Redirecting Children/Teens’ Behavior

A follow-up to the Family Ties presentation was a series of five follow-up workshops co-sponsored by CHARACTER COUNTS! and the Library Foundation of Martin County.

The free workshops (which are full) were a $395 value, with just a $20 charge per parent to cover the cost of a textbook and workbook.

Ethics in the Workplace

On Aug. 14, 2007, CHARACTER COUNTS! presented “The Conflicted Employee,” another in its series of professional seminars designed to help managers increase productivity, decrease costs and maintain ethical standards.

Nationally renowned speaker Cindy Krosky led presentation, which was held at the Wolf High-Technology Center on the Chastain Campus of IRCC.

“The Conflicted Employee” explored how to handle employees and situations that “test the limits.”

“Employers and employees often struggle to understand what actions are ‘right’ and what actions are ‘wrong,’” Ms. Krosky said. “Together we will examine ethical issues faced in the workplace and methods for properly handling the touchiest of subjects.”

HOMELESS TO HARVARD

Liz Murray's life is a triumph over adversity and a stunning example of the importance of dreaming big.

CHARACTER COUNTS! brought Liz Murray and her inspirational message to Martin County to address an audience filled with business leaders, at-risk youth and struggling adults. Murray is subject of the movie "Homeless to Harvard" and the winner of Oprah Winfrey's "Chutzpah Award." The inspirational event, held Oct. 9, 2004, at the Grace Place, collected 900 pounds of food for local food banks and also served as the official kickoff of the United Way campaign.

WHAT IS RUDENESS
COSTING YOUR BUSINESS?

Dozens of leaders from area businesses and nonprofit organizations minded their manners at a seminar called "What is rudeness costing your business" on Sept. 30, 2003. The program emphasized the “profitability of civility.”

Ann Humphries, a nationally recognized management consultant and the president of Eticon Inc. Etiquette Consultants for Business, led participants through discussions about how rude behavior affects customers and co-workers.

The group examined the perils of gossip, unreturned phone messages, abrupt e-mails, interruptions, keeping people waiting and being untidy. On the flip side, participants talked about the rewards of such admirable behavior as communicating clearly, being honest, being on time for meetings, showing appreciation, and having a sense of humor.

This seminar was hosted by CHARACTER COUNTS! and sponsored in part by First National Bank & Trust Co.
