CHARACTER COUNTS! boosts summer learning
CHARACTER COUNTS!, a program of the
United Way of Martin County, is working with summer school
students in Indiantown to build strong character.
For the second consecutive year,
CHARACTER COUNTS! received funding through a 21st Century
Community Learning Center Grant to provide enrichment
activities for students enrolled in summer school at
Warfield Elementary School and Indiantown Middle School.
Each Wednesday and Thursday afternoon
during June, CHARACTER COUNTS! director Terri May is working
with students on activities to build self-esteem, teach
manners and encourage responsible choices.
In addition to arts & crafts projects,
the middle school students are producing their own anti-drug
and alcohol public service announcements.
Furthermore, two high school senior
assistants will choreograph and instruct a group of middle
school students in forming a color guard team. “When this
activity was held last year, it boosted the self-esteem and
attendance of the students tremendously,” Ms. May said.
The 21st Century Community Learning
Center Grant program is a nationwide effort intended to
provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for
children. It funds youth development activities, drug and
violence prevention programs, technology education programs,
art, music and recreation programs, counseling and character
education.
“CHARACTER COUNTS! is thrilled to be
able to bring the resources of this grant program to the
children of Indiantown,” Ms May said.
CHARACTER COUNTS!, now in its ninth year in Martin County,
provides character-building activities and projects in
schools and civic organizations. CC! presents motivational
business seminars and works to increase public awareness of
the importance of core ethical values.
