Celebrate CHARACTER COUNTS! Week

PRESS RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 19, 2007

Martin County will observe National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week with banners, youth activities and the awarding of nearly $14,000 in mini-grants.

Following are some of the events planned locally for National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week, October 21-27:

  • All schools in the Martin County School District have planned activities to celebrate CHARACTER COUNTS! Week as well as Red Ribbon Week, a national drug prevention campaign. These include:

    • On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Pinewood Elementary will participate in Plant the Promise (to be drug-free) by planting 90 red flowers that have been donated by the Stuart Elks Lodge. The children also will be entertained by Elroy the Elk.

    • Kindergarten students will receive and wear CHARACTER COUNTS! T-shirts sponsored by Lively Orthodontics and Ampersand Graphics.

  • CHARACTER COUNTS! will announce the recipients of 16 mini-grants totaling $13, 770. These grants will enable educators to implement, enhance and expand school-based and character-building projects.

  • CHARACTER COUNTS! business and community partners will fly CHARACTER COUNTS! flags, and CC! street pole banners will line downtown Stuart.

  • CHARACTER COUNTS! in Martin County kicked off the celebration a month early with seven performances by the national traveling troupe Primary Focus. The group entertains youngsters using an interactive educational format focusing on the nationally recognized Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship. The group performed at at Bessey Creek Elementary, Felix A. Williams Elementary, Hope Rural School, Port Salerno Elementary, SeaWind Elementary and Warfield Elementary on Sept. 17, 18 and 19.

Although highly identified with schools, CHARACTER COUNTS! is a program for all ages and walks of life. The program is embraced by government, law enforcement and businesses in Martin County.

“In a world of increased violence, corporate scandals and cynicism, it is critical that we all share the responsibility of building a strong ethical foundation in our youth in addition to being positive role models ourselves at home and at work,” Ms. Laiben said in underscoring the importance of the program.
