May 22 |
Sydney Stokes, a sixth grade student at Murray Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Caring and Fairness. As a member of the school’s Lionettes Flag and Rifle Team, Sydney is always on task and willing to help other teammates if they are struggling with certain areas of a routine. She is a leader with a soft, kind approach, has a positive impact on the squad, and gives 110% every day. Sydney is a spirited young lady who always has a kind word and smile for others and always shows good character and sportsmanship. |

Cameron Herter, a fifth grade student at Crystal Lake Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Caring. As Cameron’s teacher writes, “He has such a level head and shows tremendous maturity. Recently, some of our students got impatient with another student during a kickball game because she missed a couple of balls at first base. Cameron spoke up for her. He has been the voice of reason in several situations over the past few months.” |

Madelene Wishart, an eighth grade student at Murray Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Respect and Responsibility. Madelene is a media aide who performs her duties flawlessly and always goes above and beyond. She volunteers twice a week after school in the homework club where she treats those she is helping with dignity and respect, always making sure their homework is completed. |

Griffin Curtis, a fifth grade student at J.D. Parker School of Science, Math & Technology, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Responsibility. All students at J.D. Parker are required to wear a uniform but Griffin took the opportunity to lead by setting a positive example. He began wearing a tie with his uniform and set an unexpected but well-received trend. Because of his initiative, J.D. Parker adopted a “Dress for Success” day when all students were encouraged to dress as professionals. Griffin exceeded his own standard and wore a full business suit. Griffin takes his job as a student very seriously and for that he is respected by both his peers and staff. |

Francesca Bermudez, a fourth grade student at Citrus Grove Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Trustworthiness. Francesca is always willing to help any student or adult on campus. If someone needs something, she is the first to offer. She is very honest and is bothered when someone doesn’t tell the truth. Francesca is focused and on task. She is always smiling, never complaining, and has a great outlook on being a kid! |

Alexus Gosselin, a second grade student at Crystal Lake Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Responsibility. Alexus is always on task, finishes her work, comes to class prepared, helps her fellow classmates when needed, and takes care of her books and personal property. |

Janna Lord, a senior at Jensen Beach High School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Responsibility. Janna serves at her church, performs with the Treasure Coast Classical Singers and teaches piano, voice and music theory at a local preschool. In the community and to her peers, she is a model of character and perseverance. In all she does, Janna displays personal integrity, self-sacrifice to assure the success of others, humility and a warm human spirit that lights every room she enters.

Millie Hays, a student at Crystal Lake Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Citizenship. Perseverance and determination are two traits that describe Millie, a new student to our country and a member of CLE’s PrinciPals. She is an eager, responsible student who wants to learn about everything. Recently, after an FPL presentation about energy, Millie went home and designed a machine to capture lightning. She drew an elaborate drawing that has been sent to FPL for further review.

Fatima Trujillo, a fourth grade student at Warfield Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Respect and Responsibility. Fatima is respectful to her teachers, her peers and herself. She understands the importance of an education and always tries her best. Fatima is considerate of others feelings, participates in the Safety Patrol and leads the kindergartners at the end of the day to their buses.

Nancy Vallejo, a senior at Jensen Beach High School and a recipient of the 2010 – 2011 Joe Kordick Youth Character Award, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Respect and Citizenship. Nancy is a positive role model and leader among her peers as well as respected by adults. She is active not only at school but in her church and the community and always puts others before herself.

Maria Lozoya, a student at Indiantown Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Trustworthiness. Maria is a true example of leadership that begins from within. She leads by actions, not words. Maria refuses to compromise her values of right and wrong to follow the crowd. She has back offed many times from situations that could result in negative consequences, therefore empowering other students to follow her and make good decisions. Maria is honest and respectful and when she makes a commitment, she gives it her best whether it pertains to school, her family, or her community.

Trent Thiesen, a third grade student at Felix A. Williams Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Responsibility. Trent is an example of great student character as he displays all the Pillars of Character in a consistent manner. Trent is responsible, fair and caring. He is involved in sports, tackles all his assignments with diligence, and can be trusted to do what is expected.

Casey Mancuso, a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County Cole-Clark branch in Hobe Sound and a tenth grade student at Jensen Beach High School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Responsibility. Casey is the true definition of a leader and has made a huge impression on the Boys & Girls Club staff with her desire to become a junior staff member and her willingness to help the younger members by playing games and reading to them. She is a well-rounded young lady who balances her schoolwork, extracurricular activities, friends, family and the Club very well.

Jesus Contreras-Suarez, an eighth grade student at Murray Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Responsibility and Respect. Jesus is deeply involved in the homework club. He has attended the club without fail twice a week since the beginning. No matter what type of student with whom he is paired, Jesus is courteous, respectful of their feelings and very helpful explaining a concept or helping with homework. His selfless attitude has helped countless students at Murray. |

Julia Cortes, a third grade student in Mrs. Weekman’s class at Jensen Beach Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Respect. Julia makes great behavior choices and is always respectful to her teachers and fellow classmates. She wrote a fabulous CHARACTER COUNTS! song called “Calm Down” to help students learn ways to control their emotions and deescalate when they are upset. |

Ashley Chappelle, a student at Stuart Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for displaying the Pillars of Responsibility and Trustworthiness. Ashley is a bright young woman with a strong and engaging personality. She is a leader and a wonderful role model to fellow chorus members. Ashley shows her good character and leadership skills by being a positive example that she displays to her classmates and teachers. |

Bria Anderson, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County East Stuart Branch Youth of the Year and a student at Jensen Beach High School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Citizenship. Bria has volunteered many hours for many of the East Stuart club’s special events and field trips, participates in the Club’s Culinary program and 10th Street Vocal Choir and assists her grandparents when needed. Bria is an all-around remarkable young woman.

Hojana Velasquez-Garcia, an eighth grade student at Indiantown Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Respect and Citizenship. Hojana doesn’t judge or condemn others but instead offers assistance to those that need help. She is a respectful, fair and a trusting young lady as well as a quiet and confident leader – she leads by her actions, not her words. Hojana has had a tremendous impact on students who find it hard to stand up for what’s right.

Ashley Bilodeau, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County, H. Wayne Huizenga Palm City Branch Youth of the Year nominee and a student at Martin County High School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Trustworthiness and Responsibility. Ashley volunteers at the Palm City club regularly helping the younger club members with their homework, preparing and giving out snacks, cleaning the club, helping with rotations and assisting with club programming. |

Anthony Darnell Smith, the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County, John and Marge Bolton Port Salerno branch Youth of the Year nominee and a student at Martin County High School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Responsibility. Anthony is a true leader. He works well with Club staff and members and is always coming up with his ideas to improve the Club. Anthony is always respectful, polite and very punctual and is willing to go over and above for the Club.

Jesse Alker, an eighth grade student at Stuart Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Respect. Not only is Jesse a bright student and one of Stuart Middle School’s top academic performers, he is respectful as well. Jesse is popular amongst his peers and always has a smile on his face. He is a role model and a blessing to Stuart Middle School. |

Christopher Crary, an 8th grade student at Hidden Oaks Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Caring. Chris is a kind and caring person as well as a great role model for other students. |

Week of November 14 |
Dylan Smith, a fourth grade student at Felix A. Williams Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Caring and Responsibility. Dylan instinctively helps others in his classroom on a daily basis. If he sees a student struggling with something heavy, he immediately pitches in. When he notices a classmate wrestling with an assignment, he offers help. Dylan quietly contributes to the success and happiness of the class. He does these things without being asked or seeking any recognition, and has quickly established himself as a leader and role model for everyone at the school. |

Catherine Tompkins, a seventh grade student at Hidden Oaks Middle School is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating all Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Catherine takes pride in the band room, helps others who need help in an encouraging way, and helps to make her school and community a better place. Catherine is honest, gets her work done on time and, in all situations, uses good manners.

Ezekiel Hill, a sixth grade student at Murray Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Caring and Respect. Zeke is an exemplary student, a natural leader, and treats others with respect and kindness. His respectful, kind nature has become contagious with other students throughout the school. |

Week of October 17 |
Brandi Marine, a fifth grade student at Port Salerno Elementary School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillars of Responsibility and Citizenship. Brandi is a fantastic student and a great friend to her peers. Brandi has raised money for cancer research, an initiative she took up on her own. Brandi is self-motivated and always tries to do her best – she even encourages her fellow students to do their best and work hard in school.

Megan Rooney, a seventh grade chorus student at Hidden Oaks Middle School, is being recognized as this week’s CHARACTER COUNTS! Student of the Week for demonstrating the Pillar of Caring. Megan is not only kind and courteous to others in school, but outside of school also. She spends her spare time helping those musically who are studying for the All State exam, want to improve their musicianship, and being a sixth grade study buddy. Megan is a positive, sweet, outstanding mentor. |
