The Legacy Society:
Katherine Dunscombe
The Legacy Society recognizes and honors people who have made contributions to the
United Way of Martin County Foundation.
Katherine Dunscombe and her husband John were descendants of
early settlers of Martin County and were longtime residents of
Mariner Sands.
She and John lived in Fort Lauderdale for a number of years
while he was an executive with Everglades Oil. Summers were
spent at the family farm in Boone, N.C., where "Aunt Kit and
Uncle Johnny" entertained an assortment of nieces, nephews and
extended family members.
When John retired they sold the farm and moved to Mariner
Sands, where they enjoyed playing golf, going out for dinner and
pursuing their love of travel. They enjoyed cruising and had
many wonderful adventures.
Through the years, Katherine and John were faithful donors to
United Way and other charities in the community. After John
passed away in 1987, Katherine worked with her professional
advisors to establish a trust that would provide legacy gifts
for family members and also the charities that she and John had
supported during their lifetime.
When Katherine passed away in 2002 at the age of 90, she left
a lasting legacy to United Way. The income and interest from her
gift have provided funding for special projects and emergency
needs, including a community service center in Indiantown and
local hurricane relief efforts.
Because of her outstanding generosity to the community,
Katherine Dunscombe was awarded the Lasting Legacy Award in 2003
at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon.
