The Legacy Society:
Joseph Kordick
The Legacy Society recognizes and honors people who have made contributions to the
United Way of Martin County Foundation.
Joe Kordick was a man of principle who had a servant’s heart
and a passion for mission.
Joe and his wife Phyllis came to the Treasure Coast in 1989
when he retired as a vice president with Ford Motor Co. Joe
immediately became involved with his new community and focused
his abundant energy on three primary charities: his church,
Hospice and United Way of Martin County.
At United Way he served on the board of directors and chaired
the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.
Joe recognized the importance of good morals and values and
became the founding father of United Way’s
CHARACTER COUNTS!
program.
Joe passed away in 2001 at the age of 69, but his legacy
lives on. He made provisions in his will for United Way, and the
income and interest from his gift helps fund CHARACTER COUNTS!
each year.
As a result of Joe’s legacy, the annual Youth Character
Awards are presented to outstanding students in middle and high
school who exemplify the Six Pillars of Character.
Joe always said, “There is no such thing as a bad kid, they
just haven’t been show the right way.”
Because of his generosity, Joseph Kordick was awarded the
Lasting Legacy Award in 2002 at the National Philanthropy Day
Awards Luncheon.
