The Legacy Society:
Richard Schwinkendorf
The Legacy Society recognizes and honors people who have made contributions to the
United Way of Martin County Foundation.
When Dick Schwinkendorf retired from Williams Company in
1995, he moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Jensen Beach and quickly
became involved with the United Way of Martin County.
Through the years, he served on the United Way board of
directors, the allocations committee and the advisory board for
the Volunteer &
Community Resource Center.
He was particularly interested in programs that assisted
needy children and fell in love with the
White Doves
Holiday Project. For six years he served as the warehouse
manager and coordinated the sorting, counting and distribution
of tons of food and toys. He also managed the activities of more
than 130 volunteers. Each year more than 1,200 families received
the ingredients for nourishing holiday meals and about 3,000
children received new toys.
Dick realized that children receiving holiday toys had other
needs, and in 2001 he started the
School
Supplies for Students Drive. Thanks to his efforts,
thousands of grateful students begin each school year ready to
learn with their new supplies.
Dick shared his time and talents, but he also shared his
treasurers. He was a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society
and felt it was important to leave a legacy to United Way.
When he passed away in 2005 he had named United Way as a
beneficiary in his will, endowing his annual gift. His generous
spirit lives on at United Way and children throughout the
community will benefit from his kindness, forever.
