United Way of Martin County kicked
off its community-based campaigns with a reception at
Macy's at the Treasure Coast Square mall on Oct. 31.
The community campaign is vital to
the success of United Way of Martin County’s overall
annual fund-raising campaign, as individual giving
accounts for about half of the total raised each year.
That’s different from many communities where workplace
campaigns account for the vast majority of the annual
giving. With Martin County’s high proportion of retired
and season residents, the balance shifts, however.
The Oct. 31 event was designed to
acquaint community coordinators with the strategies and
goals for 2005-06. United Way has set a $2.225 million
goal for this fund-raising year, based on the needs of
the community.
The general manager at Macy’s,
Richard Levine, hosted the event at his store. Levine
also is this year’s chairman of the communities division
of the United Way campaign cabinet.
United Way encourages even more
communities to get involved. Please contact Lucy Corley

The leaders of the current
community campaigns are as follows:
Willoughy is holding a creative
event to raise awareness about United Way and the
programs it supports. The community will be hosting an
agency fair at its clubhouse 10 a.m. Nov. 17.
“The more people understand about
the work United Way and its affiliated agencies do, the
better the support will be,” said Lucy Corley, director
of development for United Way of Martin County. “That’s
why it is so important for communities to be active and
enthusiastic about the United Way campaign.”
To honor strong participation in
the annual fund-raising campaign, United Way of Martin
County recognizes companies, communities and
organizations with Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. To be
eligible for an award, a community campaign must raise
$500 or more and meet both the per capita and
participation criteria, as follows:
