Volunteers from area businesses
and agencies helped United Way of Martin County hold
a “Thank-a-Thon” recently, reaching out to past
years’ donors to thank them and remind them of the
continuing needs in the community.
The event was part of United
Way’s effort to close the remaining gap toward its
2005-06 campaign goal of $2.225 million. As of March
22, the campaign stood about $65,000 short of the
goal.
“The amount we’ve raised so far
is greater than ever before, and the campaign has
definitely been a success,” United Way’s campaign
chairwoman, Margot Graff, said. “However, we still
have a lot of work to do to be sure that we can help
get people off waiting lists and into programs that
can help them.”
The Thank-a-Thon was held March
16 in the phone bank at the new Supervisor of
Elections Office, thanks to Vicki Davis, the
Elections Supervisor as well as a United Way board
member.
Participating United Way board
members included Laurel Kelly, Martin County
Property Appraiser; Nita Denton, Assistant State
Attorney; Margot Graff, Fidelity Federal Bank &
Trust; Miguel Coty, Martin Memorial Health Systems;
Ann Luke, Wachovia; and Taunya Bryant, United Way
Resource Investment Committee.
Other volunteers included John
Seeland of Martin Memorial Health Services and
Richard Levine, general manager of Macy’s, along
with three of his store managers.
Agency friends who participated
included Sister Mary Dooley, Hope Rural School;
David Cardno, Father & Child Resource Center; and
staff members from Gertrude Walden Child Care
Center.
The unofficial “finish line” of
the campaign will be United Way’s annual Champions
of the Community event on March 30 at St. Mary's on
East Ocean Boulevard in Stuart. The dinner event
includes awards for top donors and volunteers, and
one of the key moments will be the announcement of
whether the campaign goal of $2.25 million has been
reached.
Although fund-raising for the
campaign year continues through the end of June, the
March 30 date is critical because during April and
May, citizen review panels will be reviewing
agencies’ requests for United Way funding for
2006-07.
